How to Use the Perkfolio Balancer: A Comprehensive Guide

The Perkfolio balancer is a powerful tool designed to help you manage your cryptocurrency portfolio effectively. This guide will walk you through every aspect of using the balancer, from creating pies to rebalancing your portfolio.

Understanding Pies and Slices

In Perkfolio, your portfolio is organized using a pie-based structure:

  • Pies: Containers for grouping related assets or investment strategies
  • Slices: Individual assets (cryptocurrencies) within a pie
  • Nested Pies: Pies that contain other pies, allowing for hierarchical organization

This structure gives you flexibility to organize your investments however you prefer - by asset type, investment strategy, risk level, or any other criteria.

Setting Up Your Portfolio

Before you can use the balancer, you need to have holdings in your account:

  1. Connect Your Wallets: Navigate to the Connections section and add your wallet addresses or exchange accounts
  2. Sync Your Holdings: Go to the Balancer section and click the "Pull Holding Data" button to sync all your cryptocurrency holdings from your connected wallets
  3. Automatic Assignment: When you sync holdings, they are automatically added to your root pie (the main portfolio pie)

Your holdings will now appear as slices in your root pie, ready for you to organize and allocate.

Creating Your First Pie

To create a new pie in Perkfolio:

  1. Navigate to the Balancer section in the app
  2. Click the "Create New Pie" button (located in the top-right area of the page)
  3. A modal will open - enter a name for your pie (e.g., "Main Portfolio", "Growth Assets", "Blue Chips")
  4. If you're creating a nested pie within another pie, you'll also need to set a target allocation percentage for this pie relative to its parent
  5. Click "Create New Pie" to confirm

Remember that each pie serves as a container for your assets or other pies, with each element inside assigned a target allocation percentage.

Adding Slices to Your Pie

Slices (individual cryptocurrency holdings) are added to pies by moving them from other pies. Here's how:

  1. Ensure Holdings Are Synced: First, make sure you've clicked "Pull Holding Data" to sync your holdings. All synced holdings are automatically placed in your root pie initially.

  2. Navigate to the Source Pie: To add a holding to a new pie, you need to move it from the root pie (or another pie where it currently exists):

    • Go to the Balancer section
    • View the root pie (or the pie containing the holding you want to move)
    • Click "Edit Targets" button
  3. Move the Holding: In the edit view:

    • Find the holding you want to add to your target pie in the list
    • Click the three-dot menu (⋯) button next to the holding
    • Select "Move" from the dropdown menu
    • A dialog will open showing all available pies
    • Select the destination pie from the list
    • Click "Move" to confirm
  4. Set Allocations: After moving holdings to your pie:

    • The holding will now appear in the destination pie
    • Click "Edit Targets" on the destination pie to set target allocations
    • Adjust allocations so they total 100%

Important: Holdings can only be moved between pies - you cannot manually create a new holding. All holdings must come from your synced wallet connections.

Setting Target Allocations

To set target allocations for your portfolio:

  1. Navigate to Edit Mode: Click the "Edit Targets" button on any pie page (this takes you to /app/balancer/pie/edit/[id])
  2. View Current Allocations: In the edit view, you'll see a list of all slices (holdings and nested pies) with their current target allocations
  3. Adjust Allocations: For each slice:
    • Use the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons to adjust the percentage
    • Or directly enter a specific percentage value
    • Each slice shows its current actual percentage vs. target percentage
  4. Check Total Allocation: At the top of the edit page, you'll see "Total X% of 100%" - this must equal exactly 100% before you can save
    • If allocations don't sum to 100%, you'll see a warning showing how much you need to add or reduce
  5. Save Changes: Click the "Save" button that appears when you make changes
    • If any allocation is set to 0%, you'll be warned that this will remove those slices from the pie

Target allocations represent your ideal portfolio distribution. The balancer will use these targets to calculate needed adjustments during rebalancing.

Nested Pies for Advanced Organization

Perkfolio allows for nested pies, creating a hierarchical structure for more complex portfolios:

  1. Create a Nested Pie: While viewing any pie page, click the "Create New Pie" button in the top-right area
  2. Set Name and Allocation: In the modal that opens:
    • Enter a name for the nested pie
    • Set a target allocation percentage (this represents what percentage of the parent pie this nested pie should occupy)
    • Click "Create New Pie" to confirm
  3. Add Holdings to Nested Pie: The nested pie will appear in the parent pie's edit view:
    • Click "Edit Targets" on the parent pie
    • You'll see the nested pie listed alongside other holdings
    • To add holdings to the nested pie, you need to move them from another pie (like the root pie) using the Move action
  4. Edit Nested Pie Contents: To set allocations within the nested pie:
    • In the edit view of the parent pie, find the nested pie in the list
    • Click the arrow icon (→) next to the nested pie
    • This will navigate you to the nested pie's edit page
    • Here you can set target allocations for holdings within the nested pie

Each nested pie will have its own set of slices with target allocations that must sum to 100%. The parent pie treats the nested pie as a single slice with its own target allocation.

Monitoring Your Portfolio Balance

The Balancer view provides a comprehensive visual representation of your portfolio:

  1. Pie Chart Visualization: The interactive pie chart shows:

    • Your current allocation (actual percentages) compared to target allocations
    • Hover over slices to see detailed information
    • Visual differences help identify which assets are over or under target
  2. Portfolio Table: The table on the right side (desktop) or below (mobile) shows detailed information for each slice:

    • Asset name and logo
    • Current value in USD
    • Actual percentage of portfolio
    • Target allocation percentage
    • Delta (difference) between actual and target allocations
    • Color coding: red for over-allocated, green for under-allocated
  3. Total Value Display: At the top of the page, you'll see the total USD value of all holdings in the current pie

  4. Allocation Status: An announcement banner shows whether your total allocations equal 100%, and if not, exactly how much adjustment is needed

This visualization makes it easy to identify which assets need adjustment to match your desired allocation at a glance.

Understanding Rebalance Indicators

Perkfolio provides clear visual indicators to help you understand when your portfolio needs rebalancing:

  1. Pie Chart Visual Cues: Size differences in the pie chart segments show allocation discrepancies - larger segments indicate over-allocation relative to target

  2. Table Color Coding: In the portfolio table:

    • Red indicators: Assets that are over-allocated (above target)
    • Green indicators: Assets that are under-allocated (below target)
  3. Delta Values: The delta column shows exactly how much value (in USD) needs to be added (positive delta) or removed (negative delta) from each asset to reach target allocation

  4. Rebalance Actions Section: Below the pie chart, a dedicated rebalance section summarizes all the adjustments needed, making it easy to see what actions to take

These indicators help you quickly identify which assets need adjustment to bring your portfolio back into balance without having to calculate the differences yourself.

Rebalancing Your Portfolio

When your actual allocations drift from your targets, you'll need to rebalance:

  1. View Rebalance Information: On any pie view page, scroll down to see the rebalance actions section below the pie chart
  2. Review Rebalance Suggestions: The rebalance section shows:
    • Which assets are over-allocated (need to reduce)
    • Which assets are under-allocated (need to increase)
    • Exact USD amounts (delta values) that need to be adjusted
  3. Take Action: For each out-of-balance asset:
    • Over-allocated (negative delta, shown in red): Consider selling some of this asset to bring it back to target
    • Under-allocated (positive delta, shown in green): Consider buying more of this asset to reach target allocation
  4. Execute Trades: Use your preferred exchange or wallet to execute the necessary trades based on the rebalance suggestions

While Perkfolio doesn't currently automate the trading process, it provides clear guidance on the exact adjustments needed to maintain your desired portfolio balance.

Important Considerations and Warnings

When using the Perkfolio balancer, keep these important points in mind:

  • Total Allocation Requirement: All slices within a pie must equal exactly 100%. The system will show a warning and prevent saving if your allocations don't sum correctly. You'll see exactly how much you need to add or reduce to reach 100%.

  • Connections Required: You must have wallet connections set up before you can sync holdings. Go to the Connections section to add your wallets or exchange accounts.

  • Holdings Sync: Holdings are automatically added to your root pie when you click "Pull Holding Data". You cannot manually add arbitrary assets - only assets you actually own in your connected wallets will appear.

  • Market Fluctuations: Remember that market movements will cause your actual allocations to drift from targets over time, requiring periodic rebalancing. You may need to sync holdings again to get updated prices.

  • Nested Pie Complexity: When using nested pies, remember that allocation changes at higher levels cascade down to affect the actual allocations of assets in nested pies.

  • Removing Slices: Setting an allocation to 0% will remove that slice from the pie. You'll be warned before this action is finalized.

  • Empty Pies: Newly created pies without slices won't show meaningful data until you move holdings into them.

Practical Tips for Effective Portfolio Management

  1. Regular Reviews: Check your portfolio balance regularly, especially during volatile market periods.

  2. Gradual Rebalancing: Consider rebalancing gradually over time rather than all at once, especially for larger portfolios.

  3. Tax Considerations: Be mindful of tax implications when selling assets to rebalance (consult with a tax professional).

  4. Strategic Pie Organization: Use pies to group assets logically - by risk profile, asset type, or investment strategy.

  5. Documentation: Keep notes on your allocation strategy and rebalancing decisions for future reference.

By mastering the Perkfolio balancer, you'll be able to maintain your desired portfolio allocation through market changes, ensuring your investment strategy stays on track. Whether you're managing a simple portfolio of a few assets or a complex nested structure, the balancer provides the tools you need for efficient portfolio management.
