Getting Started with PerkFolio: Your Complete Setup Guide

Managing a portfolio spread across multiple brokerages, exchanges, and wallets is genuinely hard. Most investors deal with a patchwork of apps, spreadsheets, and mental math. PerkFolio is designed to replace all of that with one unified, real-time view of your financial picture.

This guide will walk you through setting up your account, connecting your holdings, and getting oriented with the dashboard.

Step 1: Create Your Account

Head to perkfolio.com and sign up using your email or Google account. PerkFolio supports two-factor authentication — we strongly recommend enabling it from the Settings page. Your account security directly protects your financial data.

Step 2: Connect Your Accounts

PerkFolio integrates with 50+ brokerages and exchanges via SnapTrade, a regulated and secure open-finance platform. All brokerage connections are read-only — PerkFolio can see your holdings and transactions but cannot move money or place trades on your behalf. Your credentials never touch PerkFolio's servers.

Connecting a Brokerage (Stocks, ETFs, Options)

  1. Navigate to Connections in the left sidebar
  2. Click Add Connection
  3. Search for your brokerage (e.g., Fidelity, Schwab, Interactive Brokers, Robinhood)
  4. You'll be redirected to authenticate directly with the brokerage
  5. Once connected, your holdings and transaction history sync automatically

Popular supported brokerages include: Fidelity, Charles Schwab, TD Ameritrade, E*Trade, Robinhood, Interactive Brokers, Webull, and many more.

Connecting a Crypto Exchange

For centralized exchanges like Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance:

  1. Go to Connections → Add Connection
  2. Select your exchange from the list
  3. Follow the OAuth or API key authentication flow
  4. Holdings sync automatically once connected

Adding a Self-Custody Wallet

For on-chain assets (ETH, BTC, Solana, etc.):

  1. Go to Connections → Add Wallet
  2. Enter your public wallet address — never your seed phrase or private key
  3. PerkFolio reads balances and transactions from the blockchain directly
  4. Supports Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, and other major chains

Security note: PerkFolio only ever needs your public wallet address. Anyone asking for your seed phrase or private key is attempting a scam.

Step 3: Your Dashboard — The Full Picture

Once your accounts are connected, the Dashboard is your home base. Here's what you'll see:

Net Worth Summary

At the top, your total portfolio value is calculated across all connected accounts in real time. This includes stocks, ETFs, cash positions, crypto, and DeFi holdings — everything in one number.

P&L Overview

Below the total, you'll see your profit and loss (P&L) broken out by:

  • Today — intraday change in dollar amount and percentage
  • Total — lifetime gain/loss since your first recorded transaction

This is calculated from your actual cost basis (what you paid), not just price change — so it reflects your real investment performance.

Account Breakdown

Each connected account appears as its own card, showing:

  • Account type (brokerage, IRA, exchange, wallet)
  • Current value
  • Day change
  • Holdings count

Click any account to drill into its specific holdings.

Step 4: Explore the Key Sections

Holdings

The Holdings view shows every security and asset you own across all accounts in one table. You can sort by value, P&L, percentage change, or asset name. Use this view to quickly see your largest positions or worst performers.

Balancer

The Balancer lets you define your ideal portfolio allocation using a pie-based system, then see exactly how your current holdings compare to your targets. See our full Balancer guide for a deep-dive.

Heat Maps

Visualize your portfolio as a treemap — larger boxes mean larger positions. Color coding shows performance, making it instantly obvious where gains and losses are concentrated.

AI Insights

PerkFolio's AI layer analyzes your portfolio to surface patterns, concentration risks, and opportunities you might miss when looking at raw numbers alone. This is available on Pro and Ultra plans.

Understanding Read-Only Access: Why It Matters

A common question: if PerkFolio can see everything, is it safe?

The short answer is yes, because of how the connections work. PerkFolio uses OAuth-based, read-only API integrations. This means:

  • The permissions granted are scoped to reading data only
  • No transfer, trade, or withdrawal permissions are ever requested
  • You can revoke access at any time from within your brokerage or from PerkFolio's Connections page
  • PerkFolio never stores your brokerage username or password

This model is the same approach used by tools like Mint, Personal Capital, and major financial data aggregators. It's well-established and widely used in the fintech industry.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Day One

  1. Connect everything — the more accounts you add, the more accurate your complete picture becomes. A partial view can be misleading.

  2. Check your cost basis — PerkFolio imports transaction history to calculate your true cost basis. If you've had accounts for a long time, review that the historical import looks accurate.

  3. Set up the Balancer early — even a rough target allocation gives you a reference point to measure against as markets move.

  4. Enable notifications — PerkFolio can alert you to significant portfolio moves, keeping you informed without requiring you to check constantly.

  5. Explore the AI insights — even if you're an experienced investor, the AI analysis often surfaces things that are easy to overlook in a large portfolio.
